Hoosierville

Jeff, Lily and I are currently in Indiana for the holiday season.  Whoop whoop!  Our 15 1/2 drive was pretty uneventful other than the fact that I got pretty slap happy and had a few giggle fits.  This is actually the first year that Jeff and I didn't get into ANY fights on the drive up!  That my friends is a record that may never stand again :-)

My hometown (for those of you that don't know) isn't very big.  Population of 3,844 to be exact.  We have a Wal-Mart (so that's pretty big city!) we're up to 3 stoplights, and it takes about 3 minutes to drive from one end of town to the next.  Jeff bet me that I would see at more than 15 people I know at Wal-Mart, and I'm already up to 9 and we've only been here for 2 days.  And in our house 2 days = 3 trips to Wal-Mart.  So I have a feeling that I may be losing this bet.

My sister Angie and her husband Randy came down last night.  Today we did a whole lot of nothing except eat at THE Mexican restaurant and go to Wal-Mart (of course).  At THE Mexican restaurant Jeff bought a little holiday cheer.  Pictured below for your viewing pleasure.

 Mario or Pedophile....you decide :)

Happy Holidays y'all!!!

17 Weeks

I'm officially 17 weeks!  Time is sure flying by.

Our little baby was the size of a sweet pea when we found out (@6 weeks) and has grown to the size of an onion this week!  Sometimes I feel so ready for the baby to be here, and sometimes I get so overwhelmed thinking about all that we have to do before the baby gets here. But I think once we find out the gender and get started on the nursery I'll feel a whole lot more prepared :)

Today is all about getting ready for our big trip to Indiana tomorrow!  We'll leave at 5am and hopefully be pulling into Mom's house around 9pm.  It makes for a long day of driving, but it's so worth it to be able to take "our baby" Lily with us.  Can't wait to see everyone in Indiana!!!!

16 week visit

We had our 16 week visit today, although I'm almost 17 weeks YIPEE!!  Here is a little about baby this week.

Everything looked great at the doctor.  Heartbeat is at 145, we've already had our ultrascreen done (to test for Downs Syndrome) and the good news is according to that test I'm a 20 year old!!!  Mommy has lost a pound since last visit, but gained a tummy :-)  I've been having lots of headaches and trying not take any medicine, my doctor told me to drink a Coke when I have one, so we'll see if that kicks it!

Next visit is January 16th and it's the BIG one!!! Looking forward to being able to start on Baby Lind's room.  Only 5 more months to go, YIKES!!

Maternity Clothes

So, I've held out for as long as possible wearing my regular pants with a Bella Band.  It's getting to the point where the buttons and the and the button holes are a good inch apart on my dress pants so I figure it's time to head to the maternity aisle.

I went to Target last week because they always have the cutest maternity stuff.  Yea right!  They only have the cutest maternity stuff when you're not pregnant and you pick up a cute top or dress and quickly put it back on the rack because it's Liz Lang.  I have to dress up for work, and on the weekends I always have on sweats, so what do I find it necessary to buy last week, my very first maternity purchase??  Jeans!  Of course!  Because I still have a few pairs of jeans that fit fine, I hardly ever wear them so why wouldn't I buy jeans?  (I hope my husband doesn't read this)  In my defense they are super cute, they look identical to my favorite pair of regular jeans AND I fit into a size 2, just ignore the fact that they are maternity, also ignore the fact that I said I FIT into them, I didn't buy the size 2 ;-)

I get my super cute new jeans home and try them on for my husband.  As I'm running around the house exclaiming how awesome my new jeans are I find myself pulling them up about every 2 seconds.  It's fine though, I'll grow into them right?  Wait!  What if I don't, then I'm going to constantly be pulling them up, then I won't wear them, then I wasted $30! (hey! it's Target, we're on a budget!)

So I basically go back and forth on whether I should return them or keep them and I finally decide to keep them and I wear them out shopping on Sunday.  It's true, every 2 seconds I'm pulling them up, and it's really starting to annoy me, but I look so adorable!  I go to Motherhood Maternity, just to check things out, and also buy a velour track suit, because of course I need another one of those, because of course my regular sweats don't fit anymore (note: LOT'S of sarcasm here).  While I'm in the fitting room pulling back on my super adorable awesome jeans I notice a button on the inside with some elastic.  What's this?  Could it be, adjustable jeans?!?!  Of course it is!  I am the dumbest pregnant chick around!

Needless to say, my jeans fit great, I very happily left the store with my new velour track suit in hand and headed home to tell my husband the good news.  He, unlike me, didn't find it as amazing but whatever.

Do you know what else rocks out hard core?  To have a best friend who just had a baby this past summer STOCK you up with maternity clothes!  Honestly I don't need to buy a thing (I just want to, shhh, don't tell Jeff) Kayleigh you are AWESOME!

Things I've learned

since becoming pregnant....

1. When your Mom says "You won't show until 6 months!" don't believe her (see photo below)

2. Your belly is not the only thing to grow uncontrollably (see top of the photo below)

3. It's amazing how fast the bond between you and your baby grows, within minutes!

4. Being constantly tired like you've stayed out partying until 3am and got up at 6am is not fun, especially when there was no partying involved.

5. People don't want you to lift things more than 2 pounds, and I've got to say, I'm ok with this ;-)

6. Everyone has an opinion on what you should have done, what you should be doing, what you should do in the future.  Newsflash to everyone, just because it's your opinion doesn't make it right!

7. The shirts that you thought were so big that they would for sure last your whole entire pregnancy even though they are regular shirts somehow must have shrunk in the dryer or something

8.  Dogs get more cuddly :-)

9. You miss your family more :-(

10. The top questions you get from people are:
1) When are you due?
2) Are you going to find out the sex?
3) Have you thought of names yet?

The next 5 months are going to FLY by!

Washington D.C.

I'm SO excited to be going to Washington D.C. for the first time ever!!!  We are going in a few weeks, but we'll only be there for 2 full days + one night.  I want to do and see as much as possible, but I know it's NOT possible to do and see everything that I want to do.

So, my question comes....what should we put on our To Do list for our trip??

For the love of dogs....

Someone had a link to this article on their Facebook page this morning and it just reminded me (like I need a reminder) of how much I love Lily and what a great dog she is.  The article is all about the heroic actions of dogs saving family members, entire families, and even strangers!

I know that if anyone ever tried to hurt me, or Jeff that she wouldn't let that happen.  I always wanted a small little dog, but Jeff wanted a lab so badly that I finally said "ok".  Now I can't imagine not having a lab as part of our family.

If you're thinking of getting a dog, please don't forget your local animal shelters.  There are so many unwanted dogs and puppies out there, and especially bigger dogs are harder to adopt out.

How could you resist a face like that?

Love Story

I must say, Netflix is really one of the best inventions ever. Today I was flipping through our Instant Download movies and I saw Love Story included.  If you haven't seen the movie, it was made in 1970 about a well off Harvard school boy and his girlfriend, the daughter of a baker.  His father disapproves, disinherits the son, blah, blah, blah, long story short girl dies, father feels bad, son is sad, the end.

Here's the Victoria official review of the movie:

I'm not sure if I'm watching the wrong movie and I somehow missed the classic must see movie that critics call the greatest love story of all time, but the one I watched really, really sucked.  The acting was bad, like super bad and what was with all of the pointless scenes that didn't add anything to the movie.  The entire thing was pretty confusing.

The worst part however was the ending.  First of all, WHAT was Jennifer sick with?  I was so confused and curious that I Googled it (while I was watching the movie) and found out that I didn't just miss something, they really never say what she is sick with, and no one seems to ask!  Also, get this, in my Google search, I found out that there is a movie term named after the "illness" that Jennifer has in the movie and it's named after the actress herself.

The Ali McGraw disease "Movie illness in which the only symptom is that the sufferer grows more beautiful as death approaches."

The best part is the tag line "Love means never having to say you're sorry."  Hmmmm.....I'm going to have to call BS on that one. Love only means you should apologize quicker.

So now I've moved on to Julie & Julia and it's actually got me in the mood to cook!  I better get on it fast before the urge disappears.

3 years!

Wow!  I cannot believe that 3 years ago today Jeff and I were GETTING MARRIED!  It seems like just yesterday.

We had an awesome wedding.  We got married at our favorite place, Purdue, with all of our favorite people in attendance.  It was so cool, and unfortunately will never happen again, to have all of the people we love the most in the entire world all in the same room, and the best part was there were there to direct all of their attention to me!  Oh, and Jeff too I guess ;-)

We got married at University Church, on campus.  We wanted to get married ON campus, like outside at one of the fountains, but there was a Presbyterian youth conference at Purdue that weekend and there were over 3,000 kids crawling all over campus.  When I found that out I thought it'd be better to use a church, and we were lucky enough that the church on campus someone canceled their wedding and it opened up for us.  Sucks for them, yay for us!  The only downside was the sanctuary was not air conditioned.  Thank the Lord it was in West Lafayette, IN and not Houston, TX.

Our reception was wildly inappropriate, but was a ton of fun.  Our cake was the most beautiful wedding cake I've ever seen.  My niece caught my bouquet and all of my friends were mad, while the garter landed on the floor because none of the guys wanted it.  People from the reception next door came over to our reception because it was more fun, and that one had a live band!  We were supposed to be out of the room by 11pm and I think it was after 12 before it was cleared out.  I've said many times that I wish we could do it all over because it was that much fun.

One word of advice for brides to be, EAT SOMETHING (and maybe go to bed before 5am).  You don't want to be like me and toss your cookies at your own reception, in the trash can outside the door.  Thankfully my photographer was holding my veil back instead of taking pictures!

Jeff I love you so much, I'm so lucky to have found you!  MUAH!

Craft time

I've come to terms with the fact that it will be awhile (perhaps a loooong while) before we buy an actual bed. To make myself feel better, and to help in making our room more complete I decided I needed something big, and more importantly long to hang over our bed.  Not wanting to spend a lot of money, this being a temporary thing, and the fact that I'm cheap, I decided to make something myself.

I bought 5 of the flat canvases from Hobby Lobby, used a sample paint from the color I thought I would paint the bedroom, one small bottle of craft paint and a damask pattern stencil.  I painted the canvases with the sample paint, which is one shade darker than the walls in our bedroom, then I used the damask stencil and the craft paint (in turquoise) to  stencil the pattern onto the canvases.  After I got them all finished I decided they really needed a frame.  So, I enlisted the help of my handy husband to build me one.

Here's the finished product

Once I got it hung I really wished that I had painted it ALL different and did stripes or something else that isn't matchy matchy, but since it's temporary and I don't really want to take it apart and start all over, THIS IS IT!

Oh, and it actually is centered with the bed and it's not crooked.  I just really took a horrible picture.

The Look-a-like

I must have one of those familiar faces, because I get all the time "You look like someone I know!" or "You look just like insert celebrity name here"

I've been told numerous times I look like Hilary Duff.  It must be the horse teeth, I don't know, but I don't really see it.

I've also been told I look like Reese Witherspoon.  I WISH! I also wish I had half her money, but no one has ever compared my wealth to hers ;-)

One really nice fella at my old job told me one day that I look like Phylis Diller.  Really?  That's awesome.

Oh! I get it, we both have crazy hair!

Another fine gentleman at my old company was obsessed about me looking like Hayley Mills, you know the girl from the original Parent Trap?  I'll let you be the judge.

All good things must come to an end :(

We were so lucky to have some of our very best friends come and visit us for the 4th of July.  They left this morning to head back to Indiana, I hope they had a good time!  Thankfully, Alex stayed away for most of the weekend and we actually had pretty awesome weather.  Actually, maybe I should be thanking Alex for cooling our hotter than hell city down for a few days while they were here.

My favorite meal of the weekend:
Eating at Lupes!!!  Happy Birthday Shonk!

My favorite activity of the weekend:
Finally getting some much needed sun at the Lind's swimming pool.  Thanks Ron and Julianna!

My favorite Houston activity that I FINALLY got to do!
The ZOO!  Thanks for going with me Jaime.  If you haven't been to the Houston Zoo, it's very nice.

My favorite question of the weekend:
"When are you moving back to Indiana?" :) ??????

Miss you guys already, come back and visit SOON!

Hurricane Alex

Hurricane Alex, thank you for the rain
now please go away, before you become a pain.
It's the 4th of July, a weekend for fun
fireworks, BBQ and time in the sun.
We can't very well do that if you're in the way,
if you love me at all, just listen when I say.
We have friends in town, they'll think Houston sucks
for them to visit again we'll have to give a few bucks.
Rain, rain, go away
Come again another day
Like July 6th, because we really do need it.

Sincerely
VEL

QT Pie

Last weekend I got to take pictures of the cutest, funniest little girl.  She is the daughter of Jeff's co-worker.  We went to Memorial Park and it was H-O-T, and we even met at 8:30am.  Can I please tell you, I could not even begin to count the number of crazy Houstonians that were running that morning.  That's dedication in my book!

Future photographer perhaps??

P.S. If anyone in Houston has suggestions on good picture spots, I'm open to ideas!

It's our House-iversary!

One year ago on this past Tuesday Jeff and I handed over more money than we ever had before, singed our lives on a lot of dotted lines for the next 30 years and took possesion of the biggest purchase we've made to date, we bought our house!

We've done a lot of work to our house.  When we first looked at it and saw there was wallpaper, I said "No problem!" HA!  I recently told Jeff that  the next house we buy, if it has wallpaper we aren't buying it and that's final.

The one thing you really take for granted about living in apartments for so long is the maintenance man.  Oh Mr. Maintenance Man how I miss you and the ease of calling you up to change the florescent bulbs in the kitchen.  The first time we had water leaking through the ceiling in the gameroom of our house, I'm not going to lie, I panicked.  Thank God for the home warranty!!  Not sure what we would have done without you American Home Shield :)

Although it wasn't our perfect house when we moved in, we are (slowly) making it that way.  We love it and there's nothing like driving up to your house everyday and knowing that it's yours (and the banks).

I thought I'd share a couple before and after pictures, don't worry, I have PLENTY more where these came from!

An Open Letter to JRL

Dear Husband,

I win.

I win in the dishwasher debate that we've been having for years.  The debate over whether or not you have to rinse your dishes before you put them in the dishwasher.

Should you pre-rinse your dishes before loading the dishwasher?

If you don't feel like seeing how wrong you are by reading the article, let me summarize for you.

1) Dishes will not get any cleaner if you pre-rinse them
They will especially not get cleaner if you let the dishes 'soak', or what I like to call, avoid loading the dishwasher by saying you are letting your ice cream bowl 'soak'

2) Pre-rinsing is a complete waste of time, money and energy
That's time, money and energy that this wife just does not have.

3) Rinsing dishes before loading the dishwasher can do more harm than good
Dang, our dishwasher already sucks, do we want to make it worse!  Let's not send the dishwasher to the unemployement office because we aren't giving it any work to do.  Give that dishwasher some dirty dishes to clean!

So in conclusion, I'm right, you're wrong, but I still love you.

Sincerely,

VEL
Your loving (and lovely I might add) Wife

Happy Father's Day!

My Dad has always said I was his favorite youngest daughter.  I think it's his way of making my brother and sister feel better about me being his all time favorite.

I can remember weekends at Dad's house and we would go to the drive in movie.  We'd make a big bag of popcorn, Angie always got to sit in the front because she wore glasses (pfft!), and I'm pretty sure I never made it through one whole movie without falling asleep.  Hey!  Maybe that's why I couldn't sit in the front.

He was a chef in the kitchen, making Banquet Fried Chicken, Vienna Sausages, and fruit cocktail (making sure everyone got at least one cherry) and all the Pepsi you could drink.

What he may have lacked in culinary skills ;) he made up for by being there for everything.  Basketball games, Football games, Track meets, Choir Concerts, Beauty Pageants etc, etc, etc.

Happy Father's Day Dad!  Thanks for everything, love you :)

I've been fortunate enough to have a wonderful step-dad as well.  Phil has always been there when we needed anything.  I never had to scrape snow off my windshield or warm up my car until I went college, I never had to worry about getting my oil change, windshield wiper blades changed, car checked out until I moved away from Indiana.  I got a husband and lost my mechanic! :)  Thanks Phil for everything you did and do for me.  Love you!

Happy Father's Day to ALL the father's out there!

TGIF

I'm sure a lot of you saw the picture I posted on Facebook last night of our sweet little Lily Belle.

AHHH!  She's coming after you, run for your lives!

I just wanted to make sure you all knew that she is still the sweet little puppy you all know and love, she just really, really wants those bubbles ;)

Have a great weekend everyone, I knew we will.  I see plenty of bubbles and sunshine in our future plans!

Real Housewives of...

I love them all!  Real Housewives of Orange County, New York, New Jersey, Atlanta.  They are all a bunch of hot messes, but it sure makes for interesting drama.

So, if you follow the shows, you know they are wrapping up the New York season.  There is a 3 part reunion show.  And you did read that right, there was enough drama in just the reunion that they split it into THREE shows.  Dang, these girls are craaazy.  I have a few comments about this season.

1.  Kelly is super duper C-R-A-Z-Y!  I mean really, she should be on some kind of medication, no joke.  I sit in utter disbelief during the reunion shows listening to her talk about how all the ladies bullied her.  She saw the footage, what is she seeing??  What?!?!

2. I've never had a baby, but how in the world did Bethanny look so good just days after giving birth?  I     mean besides the huge square jaw she looks fabulous.

3. Alex really spoke up this season.  She's very weird though, right?  I really did not like her in past seasons, but this season I did.  Sometimes her hair just looks terrible though (I had to say it).

4. I like Ramona this season.  She's been keeping it real, and even though she does have 'crazy eyes' I dig her.  Her runway walk, not so much.  Ha!

5.  Jill is totally trying to look like the good person and just apologize for everything that she did.  Whatever let's you sleep at night honey.

6. Sonja cracks me up!  I love everything about her, except her too big lips, a little less collagen please.  I like how she tries to get along with everyone and she really seems like she is the type of person that is genuinely nice.

7.  LuAnn, I just couldn't wait to talk about LuAnn and her brand new dance tune.  As much as I think her song is stupid, the dang thing gets stuck in my head and will not leave!  Money can't buy you class.  Well money can't buy you a singing voice either.

Whose song do you like better?  LuAnn's "Money Can't Buy you Class" or Kim's from Real Housewives of Atlanta "Don't be Tardy for Party".  I'm going to have to say tie ;)  Tie in that they are both horrible and they both get stuck in my head for days on end.

RHOPearland?? Where do I sign up??

Flashing lights

Lily didn't like Jeff's birthday card from my Mom too well, in fact, she freaked out a little more each time we played it.  And yes, we're mean, we played it a lot.

Happy Birthday Jeff!

Jeff's birthday was Friday, (YAY!). I can't tell you how old he is, he's a little sensitive, but I'll give you a hint, we were born in the same year.

In honor of Jeff's birthday I thought I would write an Acrostic Name Poem for him

J - Jokester, and even though sometimes his jokes aren't funny, I always still laugh ;)
E- Excellent breakfast maker!  He rocks at pancakes, omelette's, bacon, anything breakfast related.
F - Fabulous Doggy Daddy to Lily Belle
F - Fantastic looking.  Whoo hoo Hottie!  I'm a lucky girl.
R - Really good beer maker! If you want one ask, he loves to share.
E - Everyday he kisses me goodbye, I really am a lucky wife.
Y-  Yard guy, no he isn't, that would be Miguel (WHAT??  Y words are hard to come up with!!)

I love you baby, I couldn't ask for a better husband and I hope that you had a wonderful birthday!  MUAH!

Totally 80's

Jeff and I recently had a discussion about 80's movies.  I told him, give me a choice between an 80's movie and anything else and I would pick the 80's movie hands down.

I'm sure you've seen on the news about The Goonies anniversary and reunion and it got me thinking about my favorite 80's movies.  Granted, I was born in the 80's and by the end I was only 7, but thanks to cable T.V. I've seen all these movies over and over again.  So here they are, my top 10 favorite 80's movies.  I tried to put them in order from my favorite on down, but it just hurt my heart too much to try and decide!  So, in no particular order:

#1 Dirty Dancing

Heather Hayes and I must have watched this movie at least once a week for 2 years.  We loved it!  It was only years later that I finally figured the whole movie out.  Baby tries to help out a dance instructor, Penny, when she gets herself into a "situation".  Amidst all the drama she finds herself falling in love with the much older Jonny (Patrick "Hottie" Swayze). Of course her Dad hates it, yadda, yadda, yadda they dance at the end in the most famous of all dance scenes. "Nobody puts Baby in a corner!"

The Final Dance

#2 The Goonies

"Hey you guyyyys!"

Of COURSE The Goonies will make this list.  What kid doesn't want to go on a buried treasure hunt?  I've actually watched it so much on DVD that my disc is worn out and skips.  That's called true dedication people (or too many times of having no cable).

#3 The Little Mermaid

This one barely makes the cut, made in 1989.  Oh the songs, I knew every word, the story, it's heart wrenching, the action, it keeps you on pins and needles.  Ariel dreams of being a human and marrying the man of her dreams.  Even after making a deal with the devil a.k.a Ursula and almost ruining herself and her family the story ends happily ever after. If I had to make a call, I would say this is the BEST Disney movie EVER.  And if you disagree, I'll fight you.

"Under the Sea"

#4 E.T.

I just fulfilled a life long dream of actually being in the movie E.T.  Yes, that's right I got to ride a bike on the E.T. ride at Universal Studios, it's pretty high tech let me tell you.  The movie was actually made a year before I was born (oh yea, be jealous if you were in High School when it came out)  It's about a poor little adorable alien that gets left behind by his people, and all he wants to do is phone home.  Sweet faced Drew Barrymore (before she was smoking cigarettes two years later) and her on screen brother Elliott have to help E.T. go home.
#5 Sixteen Candles

No list of 80's movies would be complete without Sixteen Candles. It's every High School girls dream to have the head jock want to date you, the lowly sophomore.  Hopefully not every girl gives her panties to the resident geek, but I blame her parents, they forgot her freaking birthday!

#6 The Breakfast Club

While we're talking about Molly Ringwald why not include The Breakfast club, the Jock, the Brain, The Criminal, the Princess and the Kook.  5 kids have to spend a Saturday at school for various offenses they committed during the week.  Like all good 80's movies it starts out as a group of unlikely friends but by the end everyone has learned something, about someone else and themselves.  LOVE IT!

#7 Hoosiers

What self respecting Indiana girl would not include Hoosiers on her best of (all time) movie list??  Growing up our school usually had a pretty decent basketball team and every tournament season our school would shut down one afternoon to watch the inspiration we know as "Hoosiers".  If you can watch this movie without feeling some kind of emotion then your heart must be black. I do wish the movie was called "Boilermakers" though.

Jimmy Chitwood's final shot

#8 The Princess Bride
"As you wish" Dang, I wish I heard that once in a while.  KIDDING!  What can I say about the sets and the animitronics.  The part where Wesley wrestles the Rodents of Unusual Size, amazing.  And
Andre the Giant was in it!  You can't beat that!
#9 Back to the Future
Marty McFly, to escape death, goes back in time, 30 years earlier.  While he is there he almost ruins his own existence by interfering with his parents original meeting.  After finally ensuring his parents meet and fall in love, he has to dramatically make it back to the future in the DeLorean (Coach Kerr anyone?).

If you missed this movie when it came out, just tune into TBS or TNT on a Sunday afternoon and you're sure to catch it then.

#10 Gremlins

Holy moly!  This movie scared the crap out of me when I was little.  Those little creatures are so cute and cuddly and then BAM! they want to kill you!  It should be a lesson to all kids about what happens when you don't follow directions.  No getting wet, no eating after midnight and no bright lights.

So those are my top movies from the 1980's.  What were yours?
